A Library Wedding

Galleycat featured a sweet marriage proposal in a library on their blog yesterday.  I don't know about you, but I can't think of a better place for a proposal (well, maybe Napa, but I might be bias!).

Jason and I didn't get engaged in a library, but we did have our wedding pictures taken in one!  The Cleveland Public Library is a beautiful place, and I thought it was perfect for our pictures.  We even brought along The Great Gatsby (a book that's special to both of us....when Jason and I first started to date, I told him it was one of my favorite books.  He immediately bought a copy and read it.  I think that's one of the first moments when I started to fall in love with him.  A man who would read my favorite books???  Uhm, yeah!).

Speak Up YA

I'm teaming up with the wonderful Chelsea Pitcher (author of The S-Word and fellow Lucky 13s member) for an ARC giveaway.  Both of our books deal with bullying and assault, issues that are very important to us.  The main characters need to find the strength to speak out against injustices, even when it is hard to find your voice.

The winner gets signed advance copies of both our books and lots of awesome swag that goes along with it (woo-hoo!).

There are lots of different ways to enter, and we'll run the contest until 12:00 a.m. Thursday (March 28).

We'd love to hear about how you've spoken out against bullying or assault (or how someone else has spoken out for you).  We figure this is a great way to put some positive back into the world and take a stand.

Paper Is Not Dead

My mom bought be a Kindle for my birthday two years ago.  I swore I would never like an e-reader, but I have to admit, it's pretty great to be able to get a book instantly and carry tons of different books around on one device.  I was sold after only a week or two, but there is still nothing better than a good old fashioned copy of a book.

This has been reaffirmed as I start sending ARCs of CANARY out into the world.  I've been signing them (with my name...wah!), and the feeling has been incredible.  You can do that on an e-reader.

A friend shared this video with me, and I thought it made me laugh.  While it is nice to read books electronically, sometimes the real thing is still better.  Take a look for yourself...

Classroom Art

I've had some students over the past few years that are amazing artists, and I've been lucky enough to have them leave their mark in my classroom!  They've painted some of my favorite books on the wall...

The Great Gatsby (F Scott Fitzgerald):

To Kill a Mockingbird (Harper Lee):

"The Yellow Wallpaper" (Charlotte Perkins Gilman):

How cool are these paintings!?!

Right now another student is painting a scene from The Scarlet Letter and I've been begging them to paint Aibileen's words to Mae Mobley, "You is kind. You is smart.  You is important," in huge letters across the front wall.  Because really, wouldn't that be the greatest thing to see everyday?!

What books would you want to see painted on the wall?
